Serving Northern Virginia

Water heater repair, replacement, and maintenance

Gas and electric tanks, repaired or replaced

When the hot water quits, it's rarely convenient. We repair and replace gas and electric tank water heaters across Northern Virginia: no hot water, not enough hot water, leaks, rusty or smelly water, popping and rumbling from sediment, and failed elements, thermostats, and gas valves. A leaking tank can cause real water damage, so watch for the warning signs. When a tank is past saving we install a new one, sized to your household's hot-water demand for lower energy bills, or upgrade you to an endless-hot-water tankless system, installed to code.

Honest pricing when you cannot comparison-shop

A dead water heater doesn't give you a week to comparison-shop, which is exactly when a company's honesty matters most. Leonard Splaine has spent three generations earning the benefit of the doubt: 4.9 stars over 1,300-plus Google reviews, replacement estimates that cost nothing, and 5% off for seniors and military families.

Failed tanks often replaced the same day

The moment you spot a leak or lose your hot water, call us; a human picks up at 2am just as at 2pm. Same-day appointments are the norm, and many failed tanks are replaced the same day we quote them.

Water Heater Installation & Replacement

When a water heater is past saving, we install a new one the same day whenever we can, matched to your household's hot-water demand and installed to code with new fittings, a fresh relief valve, and a proper drain. Gas or electric, we size it right so you're not running out of hot water halfway through a shower.

  • same-day replacement
  • gas & electric
  • right-sized to your home
  • code-compliant install

Leaks & No Hot Water

No hot water, not enough, or water pooling around the tank, we diagnose it fast. A drip from the relief valve, a leaking drain valve, or a leaking tank all mean different things, and we tell you straight whether it's a quick fix or time for a new heater.

  • no hot water
  • tank & valve leaks
  • relief valve drips
  • straight answers
Electric water heater heating elements and a thermostat

Heating Elements & Thermostats

On an electric water heater, lukewarm or no hot water is usually a burned-out heating element or a failed thermostat. We test and replace them, and on gas models we handle the thermocouple, gas valve, and burner, so you get full, reliable hot water again.

  • heating elements
  • thermostats
  • gas valve & thermocouple
  • lukewarm water

Sediment Flush & Maintenance

Sediment builds up in the bottom of every tank and makes it pop, rumble, and waste energy. An annual flush clears it out, restores efficiency, and adds years to the tank. It's the cheapest thing you can do to keep a water heater alive.

  • sediment flush
  • popping & rumbling
  • restores efficiency
  • extends tank life

Anode Rod & Tank Longevity

The anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod that rusts so your tank doesn't. Once it's used up, the tank starts corroding from the inside. We check and replace anode rods, which is the single best way to make a water heater last well past its warranty.

  • anode rod check
  • corrosion protection
  • rusty water
  • longer tank life

Tankless Upgrade Options

Tired of running out of hot water, or want the space back? We can upgrade you to an endless-hot-water tankless system. We'll walk you through whether tankless makes sense for your home, the gas and venting requirements, and the payback, honestly.

  • tankless upgrade
  • endless hot water
  • space savings
  • honest guidance

Kyle provided emergency holiday weekend service when our a/c was completely out with 104F "feels like" temperatures. He quickly diagnosed and fixed our system, with solutions for avoiding similar problems in the future. We are grateful to Kyle and Leonard Splaine!

Couldn't have asked for better service! Leonard Splaine was timely, honest and did a wonderful job replacing our very outdated AC unit. We plan to use them again for any service or replacement in the future and we'll recommend them to our friends and family.

I've used Leonard Splaine the last 5 years. They are professional, provide quality service, and answer my questions and concerns. Michael Ford came out this year to do my spring maintenance as well as eztrap installation and condenser coil cleaning. He did an excellent job.
Candace Bond Google review
They were such gentlemen and seemed to be very knowledgeable and honest. They were also very patient and took the time to answer all of our questions. I would highly recommend these guys.
Shawn R. Yelp review
A/C stopped working on the hottest day of the year, so far. They came over the same day and had it up and running in no time. The price was reasonable and the tech was great.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions about water heaters in Northern Virginia

The questions Northern Virginia homeowners ask us most about water heaters. Anything else, the phone's faster than the internet.

How long does a water heater last?

A tank water heater usually lasts 8 to 12 years. Annual flushing and replacing the anode rod on schedule can push it toward the top of that range. Tankless units often last 20 years or more.

Why do I have no hot water or not enough?

On electric heaters it is usually a failed heating element or thermostat; on gas it is often the thermocouple, gas valve, or pilot. Not enough hot water can also mean sediment buildup or a tank that is undersized for the household. We diagnose the real cause on the first visit.

My water heater is leaking. Is it an emergency?

It depends where. A drip from the relief valve or a fitting is often a repair. Water coming from the tank itself means the tank has failed and needs replacement, and it can flood, so shut off the water and call us right away.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

If it's under about 8 years old and the fix is a valve, element, or thermostat, repair it. If it's older or the tank is leaking, replacement is the smart call, and we'll give you the honest math and a free estimate.

Is a tankless water heater worth it?

For many homes, yes: endless hot water, lower standby energy loss, and 20-plus years of life, plus you get the floor space back. It costs more upfront and can need gas and venting upgrades, so we walk you through whether it pays off for your home.
